Termination of employment must normally only happen after notice is given. It is important to remember that notice is required whether it is the employee who wishes to quit or their employers who wish to sack them. Notice periods may well be provided for within the employee’s contract of employment but, failing this, the statutory minimum periods of notice will apply. This is usually a minimum of one week’s notice for employees rising to up to 12 weeks’ notice depending on the length of their employment. During a notice period an employee is entitled to be paid as normal.
